In a significant move to modernize Australia's skilled migration program, the government has introduced the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), effective from late 2025. This new list replaces parts of the previous skilled occupation lists and is designed to better align with Australia's long-term economic needs.
What is the CSOL?
The CSOL identifies occupations that are critical to Australia's economy and where there is a sustained shortage of local talent. It is divided into three tiers:
- Tier 1: Specialist Skills Pathway (high salary threshold)
- Tier 2: Core Skills Pathway (occupations on the CSOL)
- Tier 3: Essential Skills Pathway (lower salary threshold for specific sectors)
Key Occupations Added
The new list sees a strong focus on the tech, healthcare, and green energy sectors. Occupations such as Cybersecurity Specialists, Renewable Energy Engineers, and Aged Care Nurses are prominently featured, offering streamlined pathways to permanent residency.
Impact on Latin American Applicants
For our clients from Brazil, Peru, and other Latin American countries, this update offers new opportunities, especially for those with qualifications in engineering and IT. The recognition of overseas qualifications has also been streamlined for certain CSOL occupations.
If you are planning to apply for a subclass 189, 190, or 491 visa, it is essential to check if your occupation is on the new CSOL. Contact us for a detailed assessment.
